TOKYO — The WBC is over, Japan has won the crown again — for the third time in the WBC’S brief history. And a few things have become clear. The tourney has a magical pull on people. Even my wife — who can’t tell a hit from an error and doesn’t particularly want to learn — watched the games, which is saying something.

Samurai Japan was clearly the superior team, better pitching, better defense, more polished, more disciplined, better in every way than the USA. Another thing that became clear is that the size difference between the two baseball playing countries is disappearing. Japan had three top starting pitchers in Shohei Ohtani, Yu Darvish and Roki Sasaki, who are all 6’4” or over. Their third baseman is 6’3” and weighs 215 pounds. These are some seriously big athletes.
