Crying in sports common after loss in Japan
TOKYO — There’s no crying in baseball. Tom Hanks reminded us of that in a famous line from the hit movie about women’s baseball, “A League of Their Own.” There is no crying in any sports in the West, you will hear.
It’s part of the Western tradition. Play to win. Lose like a man. Get over it. Go on to tomorrow head held high.
The times you actually see athletes cry is when they win — winning the world championship, as Michael Jordan did after leading the Chicago Bulls to his first NBA title, or when they announce their retirement, as David Beckham did, or as Michael Jordan did again when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
