Little chance WOKE movement happens in Japan
TOKYO — WOKE is an English term meaning “alert of social injustice.” It is term associated with members of the American political left wing in recent years who are acutely attuned to possible social inequalities.
The phrase was popularized by Black Lives Matter activists and has been associated with liberal causes like the “1619 Project” which asserts the USA is founded on slavery and white supremacy, is characterized by institutional racism, and that all blacks deserve reparations from the government.
WOKEism has expanded to encompass issues like sexism, discrimination against Latino, Indian and other minority groups, and more recent social concerns such as identity politics, which argues that people should be allowed to identify with any gender they wish and, on the extreme end, promotes medical sex change operations for children, without parental consent.
