Meiji Jingu Gaein Redevelopment Update
From Rochelle Kopp …
The first phase of the tree felling and transplanting began in the fall and is almost complete. Very sad to see large beautiful trees be cut down. On Tuesday, I went to a presentation by tree expert Professor Fujii, who went to look at the transplanting (trees are being moved to other parts of Jingu Gaien) and he was horrified. The trees are being transplanted in a sloppy way and are likely to die. Also, they are being transplanted too close to existing trees, which will lead to cutting their roots and thus will likely damage or even kill many of those as well.
The two lawsuits (one against Tokyo Met Government, one against Shinjuku-ku) are proceeding.
The trees cut down this time are 10% of the total planned to be cut down. So we will keep fighting to save the remaining 90%.
