TOKYO — MLB injuries are on the rise. In fact, various studies by Stan Conte and others have shown that MLB injuries have risen roughly 50% over the past 25 years, dating back to 1998 when the present system of 30 teams, with a roster limit of 25, was established.
According to Conte’s injury analytics firm, pitchers accounted for the vast majority of all Injured List appearances. But the number of baseball patients suffering from soft-tissue injuries, such as oblique muscle strains, has also increased as attention to that category of injury has grown.
So far in 2023, the New York Yankees are leading the league in injuries. As of early May 2023 there were 16 players on the Injured List: hamstring, lats, elbows, knees, biceps.
